1. The BMX Handy Become Cool Guidelines
The First Rule:
Practice.. Practice.. Practice..
The Second Rule:
There's no fun, if there's no pain.. so be prepared for the worst. To be able to do awesome tricks you're going to have to feel pain eventually.. and eventually after awhile you will not feel anymore pain.
The Third Rule:
Bikes from Wall-Mart are a big '"No No"', these bikes are extremely heavy and insufficient to performing most tricks and you will be heavily criticized by the Pros for riding these.
The Fourth Rule:
Most BMX rider's are cocky douche bags and love to show newbies up, do not be afraid to say you cannot execute a trick if asked, No one enjoys being lied too and the joke will be on you if you mess up, Instead: ask for help on how-to do the trick, you will be likely to acquire detailed assistance from a pro for not being a fool.
The Fifth Rule:
Ride everyday, make new friends, take numbers down, show people up. be showed up by other people, learn, make mistakes, get out and ride with pros... IMO: Street is the best way to learn! Trails are extreme amounts of fun!
The Sixth Rule:
Have enormous amounts of fun.. and please... do not quit your day job to ride BMX.... lol parts can be expensive if you're not sponsored..
2. Starting Out - Learning the Basic
- Handlebar Strength - To pull your bars up/back/forward/left/right - lifting weights will help improve your handlebar strength efficiently.
- Leg Strength - For Balancing tricks such as manuals, grinds, endos, and landing appropriatly. Ride street heavily for awhile then start pedaling up a hill everyday, riding up a hill helps a ton in building leg strength.
- Stomach Strength( Abs) - This is very useful when your chain breaks and can't be fixxed and also manuevering around the bike for flatland tricks and manuals.. There's a little secret technique called pumping the handlebars you shift your body weight left and right on your arms holding the handlebars which will create inertia for the bike to push off.. pumping with a chain on can help to improve and this is an incredible upper body workout and the ladies will love you :].
- Endurance - This is real important because you will not want to get too fatigued when performing a trick. If your muscles are stressed/weakened or lungs gasping for a breath of air before executing a trick there's a good chance you will fail at attempting and injure yourself or even worse... split your nut sack off the stem... a good way to build your endurance is riding street a lot.
- Getting Laid - don't be afraid of the girls. They play a vital role in strength building for your whole body. Simply said be charming and have confidence in yourself although be sure to show off your masculinity side. (practice safe sex).
- Riding Street - riding street is an awesome way to improve your strengths. You will meet other riders and get the feel for imagining the tricks you want to perform inside your head.. keep it simple and pedal real hard. Street is less boring because you're not in the same place all the time and can make riding a better experience.. go on an adventure.. go ahead! just be sure to pedal extra hard!
- Jogging - Jogging can help your joint movement and will also build every strength you could need.

Grinds
Grinds are where a rider’s bike will slide along a surface (such as a rail, ledge or lip of a ramp) on a part of the bike other than the wheels. Usually “stunt pegs” are used; these are short tubes are attached inline with an axle that project out from the main frame so that they can slide along the surface they which grind. Some grinds also involve the cranks and pedals.
- Double peg: The rider must bunny-hop on and land both pegs on the rail or ledge (wheels must be off the ground for all grinds).
- Feeble grind: The most basic grind to do on a ledge. The rider must bunny hop and land the rear peg and the front wheel on the ledge. This is easy to do on a ledge because ledges are generally wider than rails.
- Smith grind: The step up from a feeble. The rider must bunny-hop and land the front peg and rear wheel on the ledge or rail.
- Luc-e grind: The rider must bunny-hop, turn the handlebars 45 degrees, and land the back peg and the pedal on the ledge and lean back, keeping the front wheel off the ground but not grinding the front peg on the top of the ledge either.
- UnLuc-e grind: The rider bunnyhops and lands the front peg and pedal on the ledge or rail, keeping the back wheel off the ground.
- Rollercoaster grind: The rider must find two rails or ledges close enough together so they can bunny hop and grind with at least one peg on each rail.
- Icepick grind: A rear peg grind where the rider is riding on the back peg only with the front wheel above the rail or ledge they are grinding on.
- Crooked grind: When alternate pegs are on either side of the rail.
- Predator grind: When the rider does a double peg grind on a rail then hops over to his alternate pegs.
- Toothpick grind: The rider slides on the front peg only with the rear wheel in mid air.
- Toothpick hangover : A toothpick grind where the rider hangs the rear end of their bike over the opposite side of the rail or ledge they are grinding.
- Parapalegic grind: When the rider jumps off of the bike, while holding your handlebars, and grinds the rail with his legs in an erect manner, pegs are not involved.
- tire grind: bunny hop and land both tires on the rail and ride it
Air tricks
These tricks take place almost exclusively in the air, often in the vein of freestyle motocross. Freestyle dirt BMX involves many air tricks.
- Tabletop: While in the air the rider will bring the bike up to one side of him/her by turning the handlebars and using body movement making the bike look like it is flat like the top of a table.
- Barspin: Spinning the handle bars 360° while in the air.
- Tailwhip: The rider throws the bike out to one side of them while still holding onto the handle bars so the main frame goes 360° around the steer tube, the rider then catches the frame again and stands back on the pedals.
- Backflip: Both rider and bike do a backward flip while in the air, usually from one ramp to another.
- Frontflip: Both rider and bike do a forward flip while in the air, again, usually from one ramp to another.
- 180°: The rider and bike spin 180° in the air and land backwards, in what is called fakie (riding backwards).
- 360°: The rider and bike spin 360°.
- Can Can: The rider brings a foot over the bike to the other side
- No Footed Can: The rider does a can can but takes the other foot off the pedal as well, so that both legs are on one side of the bike
- Tuck no Hander: The rider tucks in the handlebars and takes both hands off
- Turn down: The rider will whip the bike out to one side and turn the handle bars into his or her legs wrapping them around their leg ( this trick was created by pro BMX rider Jesse Boughton, managed by Jordan Downie).
Variations and combinations of these tricks also exist, for example a 360° tailwhip would be where the rider spins 360° in one direction and the bike spins 360° around the steer tube in the other direction, both bike and rider will then meet again, with the rider catching the pedals, facing the same direction as before the trick.
Flatland tricks
Flatland tricks are not just used within flatland BMX, but also in street BMX. Flatland tricks usually involve much balance, more often than not with only one wheel in contact with the ground.
- Wheelie: The most basic of flatland tricks, the wheelie is when the rider rides the bike on only the back wheel whilst pedaling.
- Manual: A step-up from the wheelie, the manual is essentially the same only the rider does not pedal; this makes the trick more difficult to perform as point of balance between the front and back of the bike has to be reached. Professional riders can often do this until their bike runs out of momentum.
- Cherry Picker: The most popular advanced basic trick. Created in the 80's, it is executed by swinging the bike to a vertical position on its rear wheel while the rider sits and hops on it to maintain balance.
- Nose manual: The same concept as a manual, only performed with the back wheel in the air and the front wheel on the ground.
- Bunny hop: A bunny hop is achieved when a rider jumps the bike into the air from flat ground (this can also be done close to the lip of ramp to gain more height) so that neither wheels are touching the ground.
- Dork/Peg Wheelie/Peg Manual/: When rider puts one foot on the peg, and the other foot in the air, controlling balance, and ride down the street in a manual with the foot on the peg.
- Fork Wheelie/Backward Steamroller/: When a rider puts one foot on the front peg and spins the handlebars around, to lift the bike up into a fakie manual, with both feet on pegs.
Paul's Informative Trick Guide
How To Manual - A manual can be tricky when learning for the first time. I will lay down a numbered list of rules for this trick to be executed.
1. The Positioning of your Feet
The position in which your feet are placed on the pedals plays a vital role to performing the manual.
One of the crank arm's are going to be extended forward and the other is going to be behind the seat post. Whichever crank arm is extended forward you will want to set your foot onto the pedal a little bit behind your toes on the front pad of your foot. On The crank arm which is behind the seat post you will want to set the arch of your foot directly in the middle of the pedal.
Typically, you do not want your feet touching the crank arms, you will need to set your feet away from the crank arms. Setting your foot behind the first pin on the pedal as a guide for keeping your feet away from touching helps.
2. Pulling Your Handle Bars Back
The easiest way to do this is by pushing your body weight forward and then shifting your weight back locking your elbows while holding both of your hands on the grips in a even position keeping an appropriate weight-to-weight distribution balance on the bars pulling your bottom behind the seat like you're trying to touch your bottom against the tire. DO NOT PAY Attention to anything else but the front tire in the air.. if you have a Maxxis Holyroller then listen for that Sexy Tire to start humming .. The whole point of this trick is to keep your balance with your body weight.
